More than half a century after the Manson Family murders, Charles Manson remains one of the most infamous figures in American criminal history. Though he died in prison in 2017, the cult leader's nefarious legacy has endured through books, documentaries and continued public fascination with the crimes that made his name synonymous with violence.

For decades, historians believed Manson fathered three sons, all of whom spent much of their lives distancing themselves from his notoriety. But years after his death, another possible branch of Manson's family emerged.

Filmmaker Sophia Maddox discovered through DNA testing that she is Manson's biological granddaughter. According to Maddox, the revelation led her to uncover the story of her father, realtor Daniel Arguelles, who believes he is a biological son of Manson. Their search for answers eventually became the basis for the documentary My Grandfather Charles Manson, which explores identity, family history and the lasting effects of generational trauma.

Charles Manson's Known Children

Before Arguelles' claim emerged, Manson's three publicly known sons—Charles Manson Jr., Charles Luther Manson and Valentine Michael Manson—all largely rejected their father's legacy, changing their names or avoiding public attention. Following Manson's death in 2017, Charles Manson Jr.'s son, Jason Freeman, became the family's most visible descendant after successfully claiming Manson's remains and later participating in the legal battle over his estate.

It was during that long-running probate dispute that questions about another possible biological child began attracting wider attention.

According to court filings, Arguelles grew up believing the man who raised him was his biological father. That changed in 1981, when his mother revealed he had been conceived by another man—but said she did not know his identity. For the next three decades, Arguelles was left with little more than questions about his origin.

Those questions finally began to have answers in 2015, when advances in consumer DNA testing opened a new path into his family history. After submitting a DNA sample to Ancestry in 2015, Arguelles matched with Michael Brunner, Manson's youngest publicly known son. According to the probate petition later filed on his behalf, the results indicated a 99.99998% probability that the two men shared the same biological father.

As Arguelles dug deeper, he came to believe the answer lay in a brief encounter that had taken place decades earlier. His court petition alleges that his mother conceived him at the age of 17 after a one-night encounter with Manson in January 1959, whom she met at a bus station when the future cult leader was briefly out on parole between prison sentences. Only 10 years later, after the infamous Manson murders, did she realize the man she knew as Charlie Dearie was Charles Manson, a secret she kept for decades.

The discovery soon became part of the years-long legal battle over Manson's estate. After Manson died in 2017, multiple people came forward claiming the right to inherit his property, including his half-sister, Nancy Classen (who later withdrew her petition), grandson Jason Freeman, the son of Manson Jr., and longtime pen pal Michael Channels, who each pointed to different wills naming them as beneficiaries.

Arguelles filed his own petition asking the probate court to recognize him as Manson's biological son, arguing that he was entitled to an equal share of the estate if Manson had died without a valid will. As part of that effort, his attorneys sought access to DNA they believed could help definitively establish the relationship, asking a judge to order Freeman, Channels and the Kern County Coroner's Office to provide genetic material connected to Manson.

In 2023, however, a Los Angeles judge denied the request, ruling there was no legal basis to compel any of them to produce DNA. Although the probate proceedings brought Arguelles' claim into the public eye, the legal fight also introduced his family—including daughter Sophia Maddox—to a story they say would ultimately change their understanding of their own identity.

All About Sophia Maddox

For Maddox, her father's decades-long search for his biological family ultimately became her own.

The California-born Maddox’s parents divorced when she was young, and she found inspiration for her burgeoning acting and filmmaking career thanks to her father, a sometimes actor, model and author who frequently took her to see classic films.

Maddox says she grew up with no idea that one of America's most infamous criminals might be part of her family history. That all changed in 2022, after her father’s fateful revelation about his parentage. After learning her father may have been Manson's biological son, she decided to document the family's search for answers rather than keep the discovery private.

The result is My Grandfather Charles Manson, which follows both Maddox's investigation into her family's past and Arguelles' effort to understand the origins he spent decades searching for. It includes visits to the Indiana reform school Manson attended, and conversations with those closest to him, including former Manson Family member Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. She also developed a friendship with Michael Brunner, one of Manson’s sons, who offered moral support as Maddox’s relationship with her father was tested.

"What began as a way to process a shocking family discovery became a deeper investigation into generational trauma, identity, and whether we're destined to repeat the stories we inherit," Maddox told People. "Ultimately, I hope the film reminds people that while we can't choose where we come from, we can choose what we do with that history."

Why Sophia Maddox Is Telling Her Story

Unlike Manson's three publicly known sons, who largely changed their names or avoided public attention, Maddox, who chose the surname for herself, has decided to speak openly about her family's discovery.

She has said the documentary is not an attempt to revisit Manson's crimes or rehabilitate his image. Instead, it examines how an ordinary family processed an extraordinary revelation and the questions that followed after discovering an unexpected connection to one of America's most infamous criminals.

For Maddox, the project became more than an investigation into Manson. It was also a father-and-daughter journey, documenting her and Arguelles' strained relationship as she navigates what the discovery means.

Whether future research uncovers additional details about Arguelles' biological parentage, Maddox's story represents an unexpected new chapter in the Manson family history. For decades, public attention centered on Manson, his followers and the crimes that made his name infamous. Maddox's story shifts the focus to the generations left to grapple with a legacy they neither created nor chose.
