Were Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie Actually Engaged?
The couple announced their engagement on social media in July 2020, but the status of their relationship remained unclear at the time of Petito’s summer 2021 disappearance.
When 22-year-old Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito disappeared during a cross-country van-life journey in 2021—and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, returned to Florida without her—the public clamored to know what happened.
Petito’s social media presence, including a “van life” YouTube channel built around the couple’s journey from New York through the American West, garnered her avid followers who came to watch not only her travels through places like Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Teton National Parks, but what appeared to many to be a picture-perfect relationship with 23-year-old Laundrie. Her disappearance just over one month into the trip sparked intense media attention and online speculation about what had gone wrong.
In the weeks that followed, authorities launched a multi-state search, focusing on Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where Petito had last posted to social media. On September 19, 2021, investigators found her remains at a dispersed campsite near the park. And later, a forensic examiner ruled Petito’s death a homicide by strangulation and blunt-force trauma.
Suspicion quickly turned to Laundrie. After he returned home alone on September 1, 2021, he refused to speak with police. Three days after Petito was declared a missing person, Laundrie went missing himself. On October 20, 2021, his remains were found in a Florida nature preserve.
Near Laundrie’s body, authorities discovered a notebook in which he took responsibility for Petito’s death, writing, “I ended her life.” He described it as a so-called “mercy” killing, claiming Petito had suffered a serious injury during a fall while they were camping near a creek in Grand Teton National Park in late August 2021. Investigators ultimately rejected this explanation.
As the case unfolded and intimate details of their unraveling relationship came to light, questions about the real status of their relationship repeatedly surfaced across headlines and social media.
Beyond the Headlines: The Gabby Petito Story
This special chronicles the twists and turns of the tragic road trip through the lens of Gabby's social media presence.
Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie’s Romance
Petito and Laundrie met as teens growing up on Long Island, N.Y., and reconnected after graduation. They began dating in March 2019, shortly before Petito moved into the Laundrie family home in North Port, Fla.
By July 2020, Petito announced their engagement on Instagram, writing in the caption: “Brian asked me to marry him and I said yes!” However, her post did not include a photo of an engagement ring, and neither Petito nor Laundrie publicly shared details about wedding planning or a date.
Laundrie expressed romantic certainty in his own post around the same time, writing: “My biggest fear is that one day I'll wake up and it will have all been a dream, because that is what every second has felt like since the moment we found each other. Till death do us part or until I wake up, I'm so happy the answer was yes, Love you hunny.”
The Trip—and Fractures—Begin
Petito and Laundrie set out in July 2021 in a white van they had converted into a mobile home. Their plan: a four-month journey across national parks in the West, documenting life on social media.
But by mid-August, cracks in the relationship were showing. On August 12, police in Moab, Utah, responded to a 911 call about a domestic incident involving the couple. Bodycam footage later showed a tearful Petito telling officers she had slapped Laundrie during an argument. No charges were filed, but police separated them for the night.
Petito stopped posting publicly not long after the incident. On September 11, her family reported her missing. The case rapidly escalated to national prominence, with internet sleuths and true crime followers dissecting the couple’s relationship, travel timeline and online content.

The Engagement Question Surfaces
Amid the search and eventual recovery of both their remains, questions emerged about the seriousness of their engagement. Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, told Business Insider in a September 2021 interview that the couple had “called off” their engagement before the trip, saying they “felt too young for marriage” but decided to stay together as boyfriend and girlfriend.
That revelation added ambiguity to what had previously appeared to be a straightforward engagement. The lack of a ring photo, wedding plans or other traditional milestones further fueled speculation about whether the engagement had been symbolic or had quietly dissolved.
Friends of Petito claimed she had confided in them about emotional turbulence in the relationship. One said she encouraged Petito to take time for herself before committing to marriage.
Still, the public—and many media outlets—continued referring to Laundrie as Petito’s fiancé, even as it seemed likely that their relationship status had shifted before the trip.
So, Were They Engaged?
Petito and Laundrie were engaged—publicly and by their own account—as of July 2020. But by the summer of 2021, before they departed on their fatal journey, it appears that they had decided to pause or cancel their plans for marriage. As Schmidt told Business Insider, “They were engaged. But they called it off. I think they kind of put that on hold just because they felt it was a little fast.”
The announcement had been real. But by the time Petito went missing, the engagement may have been in name only.
