Where Is Josef Fritzl Now After Being Sentenced to Life in Prison?

Fritzl was convicted of rape, enslavement and other crimes in 2009 after imprisoning his daughter Elisabeth for almost 25 years.

Josef Fritzl kept his daughter captive for 24 years in a dungeon he built beneath his home and fathered seven children with her. The Austrian man will now die behind bars after he was moved in 2024 from an institution for inmates with mental illness to a general prison.

An order from the court in Krems an der Donau said that due to Fritzl’s “progressive dementia” and frail physical shape, he was “no longer likely to commit a criminal offence with serious consequences.”

Prosecutors appealed the transfer, but Fritzl’s legal team continued to push for even more lenient placement, including the possibility of a care facility, while courts in 2025 rejected requests for release.

An unfiltered perspective on well-known true-crime stories.

Josef Fritzl’s Basement and Arrest

The Fritzl case is known to be one of the worst in Austria’s criminal history and wasn’t uncovered until 2008. Fritzl was an electrician who imprisoned his daughter Elisabeth in 1984 after he drugged her and lured her into a cellar when she was 18. Frizl told his wife and Elisabeth’s mother, Rosemarie, that their daughter ran off to join a cult. To keep up his ruse, he would sometimes call Rosemarie, act like Elisabeth and ask her not to search for her.

Fritzl repeatedly raped Elisabeth, and she gave birth to seven children between 1989 and 2003. Three of the children stayed confined with Elisabeth in the windowless, soundproof cellar. Fritzl raised the three others in his house. (The youngest died shortly after birth.) He would leave them on the doorstep of his house and force Elisabeth to write notes saying she couldn’t care for the children to make it seem like they weren’t his.

He was only found when the oldest confined child, Kerstin, became ill and had to be taken to the hospital in April 2008. Fritzl then confessed, and DNA proved he was the father to the six children, who, along with Elisabeth, live under different identities.

Fritzl pleaded guilty in 2009 for incest, rape, enslavement, coercion and the murder by neglect of the youngest child only after he watched a video of Elisabeth describing the abuse she endured.

“It was only yesterday I realized for the first time how cruel I was to Elisabeth,” he said in court. “I had never realized it before.”

Josef Fritzl’s Life in Prison

The 91-year-old is serving a life sentence in Stein Prison (Justizanstalt Stein) in northeast Austria, about an hour drive from Vienna. He was first placed in a unit for "mentally abnormal" inmates until his transfer to the regular prison in 2024. His attorney, Astrid Wagner, said the move and his deteriorating health would help pave the way for a full release; however, the court denied Fritzl's request for release in October 2025, and he is still in custody.

“I do understand people who want me to die in jail, but I want to experience freedom one day," he told The Sun in 2023.

The prison where Fritzl resides is the second largest in Austria and is built inside a former monastery compound that’s been updated with modern security systems. The original design was to hold up to 800 people, but it was scaled back to hold closer to 350.

The prison has multiple satellite facilities, but it’s unknown exactly where Fritzl is held. There has been recent criticism of the facility after a man died by suicide in March 2026 while incarcerated after Austrian media said he had been held in isolation for a prolonged period of time.

The man had been held in the West E section of the prison, where inmates spend all but one hour a day in their cells for months or years. In 2019, four people died by suicide in the prison and another nine made attempts. In 2025, those numbers increased to eight people who died in addition to 59 reported attempts.

The country’s Ministry of Justice announced that prison employees allegedly failed regularly to check on prisoners in that part of the facility.

Stein is also the site of one of the largest massacres in Austria; in April 1945, the Nazi regime conducted the mass shooting of more than 300 Stein inmates to prevent their release. Many victims were political prisoners from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Croatia, Greece and other countries.
